It is what it is or at least as it should be. If it isn't then there is a problem and if there is a problem then we are all in a bit of a tangle and if it is a net cast in the water then we are all hearing the Jaws Music Theme and even if it is in reverse then there is something to worry about because we are probably all in the belly of the shark already and there is no power in Heaven and Hell and Earth that is interested in putting us back together again except our own stupid will to survive. So we make friends with plankton and hope this works.

This is not an explanation. This is a genuine worry I have.

Welcome to Pakistan: The country where the Jaws Music Theme is playing for everyone, all the time.

Video with 6 notes

I’m reading The Cat’s Table by Michael Ondaatje these days. One of the characters is a ‘ship breaker’. I underlined that profession twice to look it up later. Of course I know just as there are people who put things like ships together, there are also people who are charged with the duty of breaking them apart when they no longer serve the purpose they were made for. But it got really interesting when I came across this documentary about ship breakers in Gadani, Pakistan.

It is more than a little bit sad how it takes someone from thousands of miles away to come and capture the complex lives of simple people in our very own country. I suppose if students of film-making in institutions like BNU weren’t scouring for sponsorships for their tepid & extremely unambitious projects, they’d be able to cast a wider creative net.

Eh. Anyway. Watch this. This is brilliant.
